By Radio Broadcaster and Journalist, Darren McErlain
Have you ever wondered what the world sounded like before the internet, smartphones, and digital streaming? If you are looking for a unique, nostalgic getaway that bridges the gap between generations, look no further than the Kurrajong Radio Museum.
Nestled in the scenic Kurrajong Hills, this hidden gem offers visitors a captivating, hands-on trip through the "Golden Years" of radio. Whether you are a dedicated electronics enthusiast or a family looking for a fun weekend outing, the museum promises an engaging experience where history truly comes alive.
A Comprehensive Look at Radio History
The Kurrajong Radio Museum features an extraordinarily comprehensive collection of several hundred items, each individually labelled for easy recognition. The exhibits span decades of technological evolution, offering a special focus on the rich history of the Australian radio scene.
Visitors can explore a remarkably diverse range of equipment, including:
Domestic Radios: View classic home radios from yesteryear and discover how families used to gather around the airwaves.
Armed Services & Commercial Gear: Stroll through one of the finest armed services radio collections on public display anywhere, alongside professional transmission equipment.
The AWA Room: Browse a dedicated space showcasing the past achievements of the once-great Australasian Wireless Company.
Mysteries of the Deep: See an authentic 800kg ship’s radio station that carries a fascinatingly "dark past."
An Interactive Experience: Things to Do, See, and Listen To
This isn't a typical "don't touch" museum. The Kurrajong Radio Museum is light, vibrant, and highly interactive. You don't need any technical knowledge to dive right in!
Try Your Hand at Morse Code: Sit down and test your skills by sending actual Morse code to another person over the museum's working telegraph line.
Drive a Teleprinter: Get hands-on and experience the mechanical click-clack of driving a vintage teleprinter or two.
Step Into the Control Room: Check out a genuine radio station control room and listen to an open-reel tape recorder that originally cost more than a car!
Soak Up the Atmosphere: Listen to Australia at work and play on shortwave radio, or simply relax and take in the unique sounds and smells of the nostalgic world of vintage radio.

Tailored by Experts With well over 60 years of combined teaching experience, the museum's operators know how to bring history to life. Presentations can be custom-tailored to meet the specific requirements and interests of your tour or school group.
